Life and legacy

Blaise Pascal was born on 19 June 1623 in Clermont-Ferrand to Etienne Pascal, a talented mathematician and judge, and Antoinette Begon, who died when Blaise was three. His father moved the family to Paris in 1631 and personally supervised his son's education, initially withholding mathematics to focus on languages. When the twelve-year-old Blaise independently discovered that the sum of the angles of a triangle equals two right angles, Etienne relented and gave him access to Euclid's Elements. By sixteen, Pascal had written an original treatise on conic sections that astonished the mathematical community.

Pascal's contributions to science and mathematics were extraordinary in their range. At nineteen he invented the Pascaline, one of the earliest mechanical calculators, to help his father with tax computations. In 1647 he conducted experiments confirming Torricelli's theory of atmospheric pressure, demonstrating that the weight of air decreases with altitude - a finding that refuted the Aristotelian doctrine that nature abhors a vacuum. In correspondence with Pierre de Fermat in 1654, he co-founded the mathematical theory of probability, which would eventually transform fields from insurance and statistics to quantum physics.

A near-fatal carriage accident on the Pont de Neuilly in 1654, followed by a profound religious experience on the night of 23 November 1654, turned Pascal decisively toward faith. He became associated with the Jansenist community at Port-Royal and wrote the Lettres provinciales (1656-1657), a devastating and witty attack on Jesuit casuistry that is considered a masterpiece of French prose. The letters were so effective that they were banned and publicly burned, but they helped shape French literary style for generations.

Pascal spent his final years working on an ambitious defense of the Christian religion, but chronic illness prevented him from completing it. The fragments he left behind were published posthumously as the Pensees (1670), a work of extraordinary depth and literary power. In it, Pascal explored the paradox of human greatness and wretchedness, the limits of reason, and the existential choice of faith. His famous "Wager" - arguing that it is rational to believe in God because the potential gain is infinite while the potential loss is finite - remains one of the most discussed arguments in the philosophy of religion.

Pascal died in Paris on 19 August 1662, at the age of thirty-nine. The SI unit of pressure (the pascal) is named in his honor, a testament to the enduring significance of his scientific work.
