English mathematician, physicist, and astronomer whose Principia Mathematica unified terrestrial and celestial mechanics under universal laws of motion and gravitation. His invention of calculus, his experiments with light, and his laws of motion constitute one of the greatest intellectual achievements in human history.
Life and legacy
Isaac Newton was born on Christmas Day 1642 (Old Style) at Woolsthorpe Manor in Lincolnshire, a premature and frail infant whose father had died three months before. Raised largely by his grandmother after his mother remarried, Newton was a solitary child who showed early mechanical ingenuity. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1661 as a subsizar - a student who earned his keep by serving wealthier undergraduates - and there encountered the new mathematics and natural philosophy that would transform his life.
When plague closed Cambridge in 1665-1666, Newton retreated to Woolsthorpe and experienced what historians call his annus mirabilis - his "year of wonders." In that astonishing period of solitary concentration, the twenty-three-year-old Newton developed the foundations of calculus (which he called "fluxions"), conducted his prism experiments demonstrating that white light is composed of a spectrum of colors, and began formulating his theory of universal gravitation. It was one of the most extraordinary bursts of creative genius in the history of science.
Newton's masterwork, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy), was published in 1687 with the encouragement and financial support of the astronomer Edmond Halley. The Principia set out Newton's three laws of motion and his law of universal gravitation, showing that the same force that makes an apple fall to the ground also keeps the Moon in its orbit and the planets on their courses around the Sun. For the first time, a single mathematical framework could explain phenomena from the tides to the trajectories of comets. The work established classical mechanics and remained the unchallenged foundation of physics for over two centuries, until Einstein's theory of relativity.
Newton's contributions to optics were equally groundbreaking. His experiments with prisms, published in Opticks (1704), demonstrated that color is a property of light itself rather than something added by the medium through which it passes. He also built the first practical reflecting telescope (the Newtonian telescope) in 1668, a design still used by astronomers today.
In his later years, Newton served as Warden and then Master of the Royal Mint, overseeing a major recoinage of English currency, and served as President of the Royal Society from 1703 until his death. He was knighted by Queen Anne in 1705. Newton died on 20 March 1727 at the age of eighty-four and was given a state funeral at Westminster Abbey. Alexander Pope's famous couplet captures the reverence his contemporaries felt: "Nature and Nature's laws lay hid in night: / God said, Let Newton be! and all was light."
