French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist whose radical doubt and declaration "I think, therefore I am" inaugurated modern Western philosophy. He invented the Cartesian coordinate system, unifying algebra and geometry, and fundamentally reshaped how we understand the relationship between mind and body.

Life and legacy

Rene Descartes was born on 31 March 1596 in La Haye en Touraine (now renamed Descartes in his honor), the son of a minor nobleman who served as a councillor in the Parlement of Brittany. Educated at the Jesuit college of La Fleche, one of the finest schools in Europe, he received a thorough grounding in classical philosophy, mathematics, and science. After studying law at the University of Poitiers, Descartes embarked on years of travel and military service across Europe, seeking what he called the "book of the world."

In November 1619, while quartered in a heated room in Germany during the Thirty Years' War, Descartes experienced a series of dreams and visions that convinced him he had discovered the foundations of a "marvelous science." This moment of revelation set him on a lifelong quest to rebuild all knowledge on absolutely certain foundations. The result was his Discourse on the Method (1637), written in French rather than Latin to reach a wider audience. In it he deployed systematic doubt to strip away every uncertain belief, arriving at the one proposition he could not doubt: "je pense, donc je suis" - I think, therefore I am.

Descartes's philosophical system divided reality into two fundamentally different substances: mind (res cogitans, thinking substance) and matter (res extensa, extended substance). This radical dualism gave a philosophical framework for the emerging mechanical science of his age: the physical world could be studied entirely through mathematics and natural law, without reference to purpose or spirit. At the same time, the mind remained free, conscious, and irreducible to matter. The "mind-body problem" he posed remains one of philosophy's central puzzles.

In mathematics, Descartes's contribution was equally transformative. His La Geometrie, published as an appendix to the Discourse on the Method, introduced the Cartesian coordinate system, which allows geometric shapes to be expressed as algebraic equations and vice versa. This fusion of algebra and geometry created the field of analytic geometry, which became an essential tool for Newton and Leibniz in the development of calculus.

In 1649, Descartes accepted an invitation from Queen Christina of Sweden to tutor her in philosophy. The harsh Stockholm winter and the queen's insistence on 5 a.m. lessons took their toll: Descartes contracted pneumonia and died on 11 February 1650 at the age of fifty-three. His influence on philosophy, mathematics, and science was immense, and the adjective "Cartesian" remains a permanent fixture of intellectual vocabulary.
