Life and legacy
Francis Bacon was born on 22 January 1561 at York House near the Strand in London, the son of Sir Nicholas Bacon, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal, and Anne Cooke Bacon, a learned woman fluent in Latin, Greek, and French. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and Gray's Inn, Bacon pursued parallel careers in law, politics, and philosophy. He rose through the ranks of government to serve as Attorney General and then Lord Chancellor under King James I, the highest legal office in England.
Bacon's philosophical ambition was nothing less than a total reformation of human knowledge. In his great unfinished project, the Instauratio Magna (Great Instauration), he argued that centuries of reliance on Aristotelian logic and classical authority had produced stagnation rather than progress. His Novum Organum (1620) proposed a new method of inductive reasoning: instead of deducing conclusions from accepted premises, investigators should gather observations, perform experiments, and build knowledge from the ground up. He identified four "Idols of the Mind" - systematic biases that distort human understanding - a remarkably modern insight into cognitive error.
Beyond methodology, Bacon articulated a powerful vision of science as a tool for improving human life. His New Atlantis (1626), an unfinished utopian novel, imagined a society governed by a great research institution called Salomon's House, which organized collaborative inquiry across all fields of knowledge. This vision directly inspired the founders of the Royal Society of London, established in 1660, and shaped the institutional model of organized science that persists to this day.
Bacon's political career ended in disgrace when he was convicted of accepting bribes in 1621 and removed from office. He spent his remaining years writing and conducting experiments. His death in April 1626 was characteristically empirical: according to his early biographer John Aubrey, Bacon caught a fatal chill while stuffing a chicken with snow to test whether cold could preserve meat.
Though Bacon performed few experiments himself and his specific inductive tables were soon superseded, his central insight - that knowledge advances through disciplined observation and experiment rather than speculation - became the founding principle of modern science. His phrase "ipsa scientia potestas est" (knowledge itself is power), from his Meditationes Sacrae of 1597, remains one of the most quoted maxims in intellectual history.
