Italian astronomer, physicist, and polymath whose telescopic observations and defense of heliocentrism transformed humanity's understanding of the cosmos. His conflict with the Roman Inquisition became a defining moment in the history of science and free inquiry.

Life and legacy

Galileo Galilei was born in Pisa in 1564, the eldest son of Vincenzo Galilei, a noted lutenist and music theorist. Originally enrolled to study medicine at the University of Pisa, Galileo became captivated by mathematics and natural philosophy. By his late twenties he had secured a professorship in mathematics at the University of Padua, where he would spend eighteen of his most productive years.

In 1609, upon hearing of the invention of the spyglass in the Netherlands, Galileo constructed his own improved telescope and turned it toward the heavens. What he saw overturned centuries of received wisdom: the Moon had mountains and craters, Jupiter was orbited by four moons, Venus showed phases like the Moon, and the Milky Way resolved into countless individual stars. He published these findings in Sidereus Nuncius (Starry Messenger) in 1610, earning both international fame and the patronage of the Medici court in Florence.

Galileo's observations provided powerful evidence for the Copernican heliocentric model, which placed the Sun rather than the Earth at the center of the solar system. In 1632 he published his Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, which compared the Ptolemaic and Copernican models through a series of conversations between three characters. The work was widely read but provoked the Roman Inquisition, which tried Galileo in 1633 and found him "vehemently suspect of heresy." He was forced to recant and spent the remainder of his life under house arrest at his villa in Arcetri.

Even under confinement, Galileo continued his work. In 1638 he published Discourses and Mathematical Demonstrations Relating to Two New Sciences, which laid the groundwork for modern physics and the science of materials. In this work he described the laws of falling bodies, parabolic trajectories, and the strength of materials, establishing the principles that Isaac Newton would later build upon.

Galileo died on 8 January 1642, blind and confined but unbroken in his convictions. His insistence that observation and mathematics, rather than authority and tradition, should determine our understanding of nature earned him the title "Father of Modern Science." In 1992, Pope John Paul II formally acknowledged the Church's error in condemning him.
