Pythagoras was a philosopher and mathematician who founded a religious-philosophical community in southern Italy and whose school made groundbreaking contributions to mathematics, music theory, and cosmology. The Pythagorean theorem, the discovery of musical intervals as numerical ratios, and the idea that the cosmos is fundamentally mathematical all trace back to his tradition.
Life and legacy
Pythagoras was born on the island of Samos around 570 BCE. Ancient sources say he traveled extensively - to Egypt, Babylon, and possibly further - before emigrating to Croton in southern Italy around 530 BCE. There he founded a community that was simultaneously a philosophical school, a religious brotherhood, and something close to a political faction. The Pythagoreans lived by strict rules, including dietary restrictions, communal property, and a discipline of silence for initiates.
The mathematical achievements attributed to Pythagoras and his followers are remarkable, though disentangling Pythagoras's own contributions from those of later Pythagoreans is nearly impossible - the community attributed all discoveries to the master. The Pythagorean theorem (that the square of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides in a right triangle) was known to Babylonian mathematicians centuries earlier, but the Pythagoreans are credited with providing the first deductive proof. They also discovered that musical harmonies correspond to simple numerical ratios - an octave is 2:1, a fifth is 3:2, a fourth is 4:3 - a finding that had profound implications for both music theory and the philosophical conviction that reality is structured by number.
The Pythagorean idea that "all is number" was revolutionary. By demonstrating that phenomena as apparently qualitative as musical harmony could be explained through mathematical relationships, the Pythagoreans laid the groundwork for the quantitative approach to nature that would eventually become modern science. Their discovery of irrational numbers (reportedly through the diagonal of a unit square) was deeply disturbing to their worldview and, according to legend, was initially suppressed.
The Pythagorean community at Croton became politically powerful and eventually provoked a violent backlash. Around 509 BCE, their meeting houses were attacked and burned. Pythagoras himself fled to Metapontum, where he died around 495 BCE. But the school survived and flourished for generations, influencing Plato profoundly - much of the metaphysics and mathematics in Plato's dialogues has Pythagorean roots.
Pythagoras remains one of the most influential and enigmatic figures in intellectual history. He left no writings, and his teachings were transmitted orally within a secretive community, making it difficult to distinguish historical fact from legend. Yet the core Pythagorean insight - that the universe is comprehensible through mathematics - remains the foundational assumption of modern science.
