A Prussian naturalist and explorer whose five-year expedition through Latin America revolutionized the study of the natural world. Humboldt was the first to describe nature as an interconnected whole, laying the foundations for ecology, biogeography, and climate science. In his day, he was the most famous scientist in the world.

Life and legacy

Alexander von Humboldt was born into a wealthy Prussian aristocratic family in Berlin. His father died when he was nine, and his mother, stern and unaffectionate, directed his education toward a career in government. Humboldt studied at the universities of Frankfurt an der Oder, Göttingen, and the Freiberg School of Mines, but his true passion was always the natural world. He read voraciously, corresponded with the leading scientists of Europe, and waited impatiently for the chance to explore.

That chance came in 1799, when the Spanish king granted Humboldt and his companion Aimé Bonpland unprecedented access to Spain's American colonies. Over five years, they traveled nearly 10,000 kilometers through modern Venezuela, Cuba, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Mexico, climbing volcanoes, mapping rivers, collecting thousands of plant and animal specimens, and making meticulous measurements of temperature, altitude, and atmospheric conditions. Humboldt climbed Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador to nearly 19,286 feet - a world altitude record at the time - and experienced firsthand how climate, vegetation, and animal life changed with elevation.

From these observations, Humboldt developed ideas that were revolutionary. His concept of "Naturgemälde" - a painting of nature - showed how plants, climate, and geography were interconnected across altitude zones, a visualization that became the foundation of biogeography and ecology. He was the first to describe human-caused climate change, noting how deforestation around Lake Valencia in Venezuela had altered local rainfall and temperature. He mapped isothermal lines, invented the concept of magnetic storms, and connected ocean currents to climate patterns. The Humboldt Current off South America bears his name.

Humboldt's influence was extraordinary. Charles Darwin called him "the greatest scientific traveller who ever lived" and credited "Personal Narrative of a Journey to the Equinoctial Regions" as the book that inspired him to embark on the voyage of the Beagle. Simón Bolívar, whom Humboldt met in Paris, called him "the true discoverer of South America." Thomas Jefferson hosted him at the White House and corresponded with him for years.

In his final decades, Humboldt poured his vision into "Cosmos" (1845-1862), an audacious attempt to describe the entire physical world in a single work. He died in Berlin on May 6, 1859, at the age of eighty-nine. His funeral was a state occasion. More places on earth are named after Humboldt than after any other person: towns, rivers, mountains, ocean currents, and even a species of squid. His holistic vision of nature as an interconnected web of life anticipated modern environmental science by more than a century.
