Marie Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person to win Nobel Prizes in two different sciences, and a pioneering researcher whose work on radioactivity transformed physics, chemistry, and medicine. Her discoveries of polonium and radium opened entirely new fields of scientific inquiry.
Life and legacy
Maria Sklodowska was born in Warsaw in 1867 under Russian imperial rule, the youngest of five children in a family of educators. Women were barred from higher education in Russian-controlled Poland, so after years of working as a governess to fund her sister's medical studies in Paris, she finally enrolled at the Sorbonne in 1891 at age twenty-four. Despite poverty and the challenge of studying in French, she graduated first in her physics degree in 1893 and second in mathematics the following year.
In 1894, she met Pierre Curie, a physicist studying magnetism and crystal symmetry. They married in 1895 and began one of the most productive scientific partnerships in history. Inspired by Henri Becquerel's discovery of uranium rays, Marie chose to investigate this phenomenon for her doctoral research. She demonstrated that the radiation was an atomic property - not a chemical reaction - coining the term "radioactivity." Working in a converted shed with primitive equipment, the Curies processed tons of pitchblende ore and in 1898 announced the discovery of two new elements: polonium (named for Marie's homeland) and radium.
In 1903, Marie and Pierre Curie, along with Henri Becquerel, were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their work on radioactivity. Marie was initially left off the nomination until Pierre insisted she be included. Tragedy struck in 1906 when Pierre was killed by a horse-drawn wagon on a Paris street. Marie took over his teaching position at the Sorbonne, becoming its first female professor. In 1911, she received a second Nobel Prize, this time in Chemistry, for her isolation of pure radium and determination of its atomic weight - making her the first person to win two Nobel Prizes.
During World War I, Curie developed mobile X-ray units - nicknamed "petites Curies" - and drove them to the front lines to help surgeons locate bullets and shrapnel in wounded soldiers. She trained her teenage daughter Irène and other women to operate the equipment. After the war, she directed the Radium Institute in Paris, which became a leading center of nuclear research. Irène and her husband Frédéric Joliot would win their own Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1935.
Marie Curie died on July 4, 1934, of aplastic anemia almost certainly caused by decades of radiation exposure. Her notebooks remain so radioactive that they are stored in lead-lined boxes and require protective clothing to handle. In 1995, she became the first woman to be interred on her own merits in the Panthéon in Paris. Her legacy endures not only in the sciences she transformed but as an icon of perseverance against institutional barriers.
